Review: Episode I Racer PC

Posted by DevanJedi in Games, Games, Reviews on December 23rd, 2000

(Buy Racer from Amazon.com )
“Now this is Pod Racing!”

Or at least it should be.

The Pod Race sequence in the film is so perfect for all kinds of merchandising follow-ups that sometimes I almost forget what came first- the movie or the merchandise. When you watch Star Wars Episode I- The Phantom Menace the first time (when was that?), there is a definite adrenalin rush during the Pod Race sequence and you know you want to be in there with the racers. Well, now you can- almost.

The game based on that celebrated work of visual effects is just great in the same places that the scene in the film was. It is exciting, engrossing and very original in its style. How many games let you be Anakin Skywalker (or Teemto Pagalies, or Dud Bolt, or …), race the fastest machines in the galaxy and do it in a totally unique way? You see, racing the podracer just ain’t like dusting crops.

The game is different from your average racing game in some very important ways. First of all, you are not driving a car. The mechanics and dynamics of the pod racer take time to get adjusted to, but when you do, you will feel the power. The skill is not in simple left-right maneouvering of the vehicle; the racer doesn’t respond like your average Porsche. Driving the racer is a cross between driving a supersonic Formula 1 McLaren and maneouvering a sail boat on a windy day. Don’t get frightened just yet- it’s fun.

There are dozens of tracks of increasing difficulty level. You can go to the next only after clearing the previous- clearing means finishing the race ranked fourth or above. The different arenas are visually stunning (frightening at times!) and provide for some great races. Each arena has its own intricacies and danger-zones. Your competitors (the same guys you see in the movie) will try to knock you off the course, but that will only cause you to lose time. You do not have to be Anakin Skywalker; you can be any of the other bozos- and at times it is advisable to NOT be Anakin because other aliens may have pods suited to a particular course.

The game is a LOT of fun. I am not a general racing-game fan; but I loved this one… initially. The races seemed tough at the start, but once you get the hang of the vehicle and its intriciacies, each new level will be just perfect.

The only problem with the game, in my opinion, is that the game does not have a high replay value. You may get bored with the same races and same arenas. Yes the arenas are breathtaking, but can you stare at the Himalayas for ever? You get my point, I hope. And its not just the replay, by the time you get to the more difficult levels, you might not have the patience to try each level the few times it may take you to clear them. The problem, summarized, is monotony.

In all, though, its a great game. If you are a racing buff and a Star Wars fan this is perfect. If you are a Star Wars fan and a general gaming fan, approach with caution- be prepared for short-term pleasures.

DevanJedi’s Rating- 7.5/10

Review: Rebellion PC

Posted by DevanJedi in Games, Games, Reviews on December 23rd, 2000

First of all I would like to say that this a great game for the Star Wars fans. It will feel like a much more personal strategy game than most others. For the Star Wars fan, there could be nothing better than sending Han Solo on a mission to destroy Endor’s Shield Generator and have him come back and say “I told you it was gonna work!” And believe me, he does say that; and a lot more. If you’ve lived (and loved) the movie you will love this game. For the non-Star Wars fan, this is also a great game; but not as good as many other strategy Games availble. There are a lot of elements that are unique to this game, such as the individual characters and the organization of missions. Wars can be conducted in a tactical mode; where you control each ship, assign squadrons to sections of the fleet. All of this is fascinating and UNIQUE; but only if you get the hang of it! All in all, I would say if you are even mildly a Star Wars fan, this game is for you. If Star Wars is just another movie to you, it still can be a fun game; but that depends on your interests. If you are looking for a complete war strategy game with a lot of tactical game play, this is the game for you.

Review: Rogue Squadron N64

Posted by DevanJedi in Games, Games, Reviews on December 23rd, 2000

This game kicks butt. No only do you get to fly X-wing’s, Y-wing’s and A-wing, T-16’s, Snowpeeder’s, you can fly a ship that made it’s first apprence in this game, the V-wing, and if your cheat freak like me you can even fly the Falcon,TIE Interceptor, even get to pilot an AT-ST. And just recently the Naboo N-1 Starfighter. All the ships are great in detail, sound FX, and handling. The stages have excellent graphics and the AI are smarter than usually. All up it’s a great game and a must have if your a Star Wars fan, and if your not, it’ll make you one.

Review: Jedi Power Battles

Posted by DevanJedi in Games, Games, Reviews on December 23rd, 2000

(Buy JPB from Amazon.com )
Ok, Finally I get my first review done here….

Gameplay: It is has a “so-so” control figure. The fun factor is high in this game because it is fun to slash through the enemy. You feel like a true jedi! You can choose between 5 or maybe 6 jedis. There is power ups and extra stuff. The great amount of codes allows you to have fun and complete the game again with ease. It may seem fun but there is a lot of glitches. Like you may see a rock to jump on and when you jump on it you fall right through. You may need a punching bag because I heard it goes into a freeze in certin parts of the game. Full Grades at the bottem.

Graphics: Ew, The horror! Nah, Just kidding! Ok, The graphics for this game is pretty bad… But the lightsabre looks good and the faces is alright. I am not sure if you can identify the jedi’s by looking at there faces in action. There is some graphics glitches… No doubt LucasArts should of looked at this game twice…

Sound: Ok about the sound it is alright. No John Williams but a little background sound to keep you wiping those droids clean.

Last Comments: Ok, It is a game for the true Star Wars gamers. If your not you won’t like it because of the lack of effort LucasArts gave this game. If your like me you would put aside the reviews and just love the game as it is: Kicking Droid Butt

Final Grades
Gameplay: 9.4/10
Graphics: 6.8/10
Sound: 9.0/10
