What does it mean?
According to John Williams in his interview to the Star Wars Insider, the inspiration for the theme of DOTF was an old Celtic poem called ‘CAD GODDEU - The Battle of the Trees’. From the nine words used in the Sanskrit version it is evident that the entire poem has not been translated. The actual poem spans many pages. But a little knowledge of Sanskrit allows me to make the speculation that a general meaning might be ‘All the dread is mainly in the head’. This, to a certain extent, matches a line of the original poem, which says "Under the tongue root a fight most dread, and another raging, behind, in the head." Make what you want of it.

What are Dianogas?

Posted by DevanJedi in Star Wars FAQ, Films FAQ, Species FAQ on April 12th, 2006

When the strange creature in the garbage compactor attacks Luke, Leia, Hand and Chewbacca in 1977’s, one may wonder where the creature came from and what it’s purpose in life was.

Dianogas (or garbage squids) have spread throughout the galaxy, growing up to ten metres long and thriving especially in sewers. Feeding on refuse, these creatures are sometimes bred in space for waste processing. older specimens are very aggressive, seizing prey in their seven muscular tentacles.

What is an Assault Frigate?

Posted by DevanJedi in Star Wars FAQ, Films FAQ, Ships FAQ on April 10th, 2006

These Rebel, and later New Republic ships are actually Imperial Dreadnaught heavy cruisers that have been painstakingly and cleverly modified to create combat starships 700 metres lonf. While Imperial ships required crew of 16,000, the Alliance retooling has reduced the crew requirements by more than two-thirds. Removing tons of superstructure has increased engine capacity while lowered fuel consumption. The addition of two rear solar fins has made the assault frigates faster and more maneuverable. The frigates usually carry about 100 troops or 7,500 metric tons of cargo. They each carry a modified assault shuttle piggyback atop their superstructure, while twenty umbilical docking tubes can be used for light freighters and starfighters. The ships are armed with fifteen regular and twenty quad laser cannons along with fifteen turbo laser batteries.

What is the Corellian Gunship?

A dedicated combat capital ship, it is designed to be fast and deadly. At 120 metres long, it usually carries eight double turbo laser canons, six quad laser canons, and four concussion missile launch tubes. Engines fill more than half its interior. With a small command crew and technical staff- the ship is an excellent antistarfighter platform. The new Republic makes extensive use of these vessels.

What are Bothans?

Posted by DevanJedi in Star Wars FAQ, Films FAQ, Species FAQ on April 8th, 2006

Mon Mothma mentions Bothan spies in Return of the Jedi and with no further mention of their kind in the rest of the films, one could easily remain confused forever. That’s where the expanded universe comes in.

A species from Bothawui, Bothans are renowned as the best spies in the galaxy. Prior to the battle of Endor, Bothan spies captured an Imperial freighter carrying highly classified data about the second Death Star. New Republic Councilor Borsk Fey’lya is a Bothan who was born on the Bothan colony world of Kothlis.

The Bothan spynet is second to none, with operatives throughout the galaxy. Even though the spynet was used primarily to support the Rebel Alliance, the Empire and the criminal underworld occasionally found the spynet useful for their own purposes. The spynet’s work often put its members at great risk.

Yesterday by Luke Skywalker

Posted by DevanJedi in Films, Classic Trilogy, Humor on April 8th, 2006

Wrote this with my sister many, many years ago when this site began. Recently rediscovered.
(later re-done by The Beatles)
Yesterday, the rebellion seemed so far away
Now it looks as though they’re here to stay
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

Suddenly, ObiWan’s half the man he used to be,
And his shadow’s hanging over me.
Oh, yesterday came suddenly.

Why he had to go I don’t know he wouldn’t say. (“Strike me down and I will become more powerful than you can imagine?”)
I kept whining along, now I long for yesterday.

Yesterday, the practice droid was such an easy game to play.
Now losing limbs is here to stay…
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

Star Wars in India: the Lines

Posted by DevanJedi in Films, Prequels on April 7th, 2006

The following is the second in a series of articles originally produced on GalaxyFarAway.com in the fall of 1999, coinciding with the release of Star Wars Episode I in India.

From the Lines
Hi! I (DevanJedi) just saw it in Hindi; and I must say, the dubbing was done well. I knew every line in English, so could tell the difference. It was well done; but for a bit of a heavy dose of  Hindi! Another problem was that the ‘profecy of the chosen one’ was reffered to as ’ chosen by God’! God? In Star Wars? (more…)

Kenobi and the Extraterrestrial Duck

Posted by DevanJedi in Fun Facts on April 6th, 2006

Before Howard, there was another duck in George Lucas’ life. There was a curious bit of dialogue between Ob-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker in the novelization of 1977’s original Star Wars. In the scene where Kenobi mentions Luke’s father and their past in the “Clone Wars”, the following interchange occurs:

Kenobi: I understand you are quite a pilot yourself. Piloting and navigation aren’t hereditary, but a number of the things that can combine to make a good small-ship pilot are. Those you may have inherited. Still, even a duck has to be taught to swim.
Luke: What’s a duck?
Kenobi: Never mind.

A funny little interchange, left in there by Lucas, no doubt, as a little inside joke between Earthling writer and Earthling reader. Of course, in the Star Wars universe it would seem to imply that Obi-Wan Kenobi was aware of our planet, a long time in the future in a galaxy far, far away.

Star Wars and Seinfeld

Seinfeld Star Wars Spoof Poster
I have this image of the cast of Seinfeld in a Star Wars spoof poster but have no clue what the origin is. The only clues are these items available on eBay (ceramic mugs, t-shirts) with this image on them. I wonder if those sellers found the poster in my image archive.

I have asked a few Seinfeld webmasters for the answer- will update when I know. Please comment below if you have an idea.
